A primary goal of the ASME VIII, Div.2 re-write project is to incorporate the best available technology into the updated document. Until this point, the focus for modification to the analysis method for flanged joints has been the incorporation of leakage based design. However, the proposed re-write incorporating leakage-based design was recently rejected by the ASME VIII Design committee and all reference to that method was removed from the re-write document. This leaves us with, essentially, the same flange design method that has been in the ASME code since the 19405. To incorporate as much as possible of the latest technology in bolted flanged joints into the ASME VIII, Div.2 re-write, this project (Improved Flange Design) has been initiated to identify areas of possible improvement, develop rules for incorporation of those areas of improvement into the code and finally, verify any newly developed rules or technology. The intent of the project is to incorporate the best available technology into the flange analysis section in order to provide designs that meet the following goals: 1. Fit for Purpose (Safe) 2. Less prone to leakage 3. Use as simple as practical methods of design The project will prioritize the work based on areas of known deficiencies with the present method of flange design in the ASME code and on areas that will provide the largest impact in overall reduction of the incidence of flange failure (leakage). The project will look at recent international code developments on improved flange design (EN-1591) and recent testing conducted by PVRC and JPVRC researchers on various aspects of flange design. The project is structured in three phases: Phase #1: Summarize status of flange design on world-wide basis Phase #2: Draft alternative flange design rules, incorporating the findings of Phase #1 Phase #3; Further research or testing to verify validity of design rules ISBN No. 1-58145-521-6 Library of Congress va,.an.,'i'S Card Number: 85-647116
